Ken
Anderson
National Transit Director
Washington DC Office Lead
Ken Anderson is known for developing projects with architectural solutions that transform lives for the better. As the studio lead for RNL’s Washington, D.C. office and head of RNL’s transit practice, Ken has helped establish the firm as one of the premier transit architecture firms in the nation.
Since joining RNL in 2000, Ken has overseen a number of innovative, highly complex projects that leveraged his particular expertise in transit-oriented development, and sustainability and wellness as it relates to the transit industry. This expertise, combined with his work to raise the profile of RNL’s transit practice nationally led to his appointment to the RNL Board of Directors. In this capacity, Ken contributes to the strategy and direction of the firm.
Ultimately, Ken’s goal is to design spaces that touch the soul – no small feat, but as head of RNL’s Washington, D.C. practice, Ken is working hard to build a team that does just that in their region. His diverse project experience includes transit facilities, mixed-use commercial, urban design, civic, and religious architecture. His projects at RNL thus far include the award-winning LA Metro Division 13 Bus Operations & Maintenance Facility and the Minneapolis Metro Heywood Bus Operations & Maintenance Facility.
Ken has given presentations and authored bylined articles on these experiences for a number of industry organizations including the American Public Transportation Association, of which he is an active member. Ken is also active in the Virginia Transit Association and the Southwest Transit Association. He has served as a board member for several organizations, including Friends of Transit, Phoenix Community Alliance and United Methodist Board of Camping.
Born and raised in Northern Virginia, Ken spent the first part of his adult life as a professional tennis player on the international circuit, touring Europe and the Middle East, among other areas. While his pro career was brief, it helped broaden Ken’s understanding of cultures, history and regional influences – all of which have contributed to making him a better Architect, leader and professional.
