Urban Design/Planning
The design of Torrance Transit Center creates a strong Civic vision for transit users and access for visitors. The positioning of the transit center for the Urban Planning of the site helps reinforce the Transit Oriented Development. Future parking garage and retail development as well as light industrial uses are planned.
The design creates a large welcoming plaza which is covered by a grand translucent canopy. From a programming viewpoint, the building is separated by functions in two buildings, with the primary circulation in the middle. The transit center is targeted for LEED Platinum.
Torrance Transit directly operates a network of eight (8) fixed bus routes serving the City of Torrance with portions of routes (approximately 60%) also serving the neighboring cities of Carson, Compton, El Segundo, Gardena, Hawthorne, Lawndale, Lomita, Long Beach, Los Angeles, Manhattan Beach, Redondo Beach and the unincorporated areas of Los Angeles County. System wide, on average, Torrance Transit experiences approximately 3.6 million passenger boardings per year.
This transit center is a catalyst for economic development in the region. It’s also a catalyst for a Green Line extension to the city of Torrance.
