The design build team of Sundt Construction and RNL was selected through a design-build competition to provide comprehensive planning, full A/E design and construction services for the West Operating Facility designed to operate, maintain, and service a fleet of 250 buses. The facility includes administrative offices, operations facilities for over 500 bus operators, a bus maintenance building, bus canopies, and a full LNG/CNG/diesel fueling center with fare retrieval and bus wash.
One of the client’s primary desires was to have all bays in the maintenance building designed to be drive-thru bays, and to have all employees in close proximity to each other, which required that the design team develop a unique design solution. The result, a three-building complex consisting of an Administration/Operations Building, the Fuel/Service Facility and the Bus Maintenance Building. The uniqueness of the design emerged as the maintenance building was designed with 100% drive-thru maintenance capability by having all bays accessible from a central circulation spine, with overhead doors at the end of each bay to permit the buses to exit the building without any backing maneuvers. This facility is the first large-scale bus operations facility anywhere in the US designed to operate without any backing maneuvers, which will enhance safety throughout the entire site.
This new maintenance and operating facility allows the City of Phoenix to expand service and be more efficient in operating buses in the area.
