RNL was the Design Architect and Metro’s Owner’s Representative who oversaw the Design-Build team for the El Monte Transit Center; a 350,000 s.f., two level bus transit center serving Metro Express and Local service, Foothill Transit, Greyhound, El Monte Transit, Metrolink Shuttle and Rosemead Explorer. The project consists of 29 bus berths, 17 on the lower level serving local buses and 12 on the upper level serving express buses. There are also 20 additional layover bays designated for the various transit agencies serving the station. The passenger zones are accessed through a grand entry that is framed by the iconic canopy and two elegant single-story buildings on either side of the entry plaza. The buildings house transit supportive retail space, one of which will be a Bike Station. The second building is a dedicated transit store with office and support space for Metro, Foothill Transit, and Greyhound fare media sales and customer service.
The angled walls of the entry buildings and fabric canopy set the tone of the design, which is carried throughout the details of the paving, platform canopies, building materials and passenger amenities. The project is registered to achieve LEED-NC Gold certification and incorporates numerous innovations including reduced heat gain in paving and buildings, all LED lighting, increased ventilation, daylight strategies, and use of low-water-use native landscaping.
