Burj Dubai is a master planned community that will become the major urban node within Dubai, United Arab Emirates. The project will be an “icon” development within the country. “Burj” in Arabic means “tower,” and the Burj Dubai development will provide the setting for the world’s tallest building; Dubai Tower. The project will be developed on 168 hectares of land adjacent to the existing high-rise residential and office districts in Dubai. The site was part of a former military facility.

The high-density development will have the Burj Dubai Tower as the major building element, but the project will also include a large retail shopping center, a business center, a significant collection of high-rise residential towers, an “Old Town” residential and retail center, which will be an acknowledgement of the more traditional building forms of the culture, and a major urban lake and park. The major organizing element of the project is Burj Dubai Boulevard; a 3.5 kilometer “loop” road, which will provide access to all elements of the project. A 9.3 hectare lake and canal system will link major elements of the project, and will provide a visual, recreational, as well as transportation element to the project. Construction of the project began in July 2003.
