The 25-year General Development Plan is a land use and strategic master plan for the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL ) main campus in Golden and their satellite National Wind Technology site in Jefferson County near Rocky Flats. The land use plan involved projecting laboratory and office facility needs to a site population of 2,500 with an ultimate build-out of 1.7 million sf. The goal of the plan was to create a sustainable, “living laboratory” campus that embodies the renewable resource mission goals of the organization. The master plan proposes facility development that supports NREL goals through demonstration with outdoor interpretive areas in a pedestrian-friendly setting.

RNL assisted NREL with strategic planning involving consolidating existing lease space into NREL -owned space, third-party financing strategies for facilities development, on and off-site parking strategies, and outreach opportunities to increase public visibility of the laboratory.

RNL completed the plan in association with Wallace Roberts and Todd. NREL , as a part of the United States Department of Energy, is dedicated to the research of renewable energy sources and applications. Their mission includes solar energy, wind technology, hydrogen fuel research, and biomass energy generation.
