Los Angeles and Abu Dhabi

Pat McKelvey is Senior Principal, Los Angeles Office Studio Lead and MENA Region Director.  In addition to producing award-winning design work in 20 countries, over the course of his 30 years with RNL, Pat has been instrumental in setting up successful offices for RNL in Los Angeles and Abu Dhabi, UAE.

Pat brings more than 35 years of experience in international planning and design, transit, public facilities, office buildings, and corporate office interiors to his role at RNL. In his role as MENA Region Director and head of RNL’s Los Angeles office, Pat’s primary role is to drive growth and oversee project development and execution. Pat is a tenacious leader who thrives on coming up with creative solutions to complex building and design challenges. He also leads by example; his teams will tell you he is one of the hardest working people you will find. So naturally, in 1989, when RNL was looking for the best person to start up and lead the LA office, they turned to Pat. And later, when the firm was looking to expand into international work, Pat was the go-to, establishing a highly successful practice in Abu Dhabi.

Today, due in large part to Pat’s leadership, the firm is known throughout the MENA region for large-scale master planning and design work, including projects such as Dubai South – the Villages, Shams Abu Dhabi, Movenpick Laguna Tower, Burj Khalifa Master Plan and Kuala Lumpur City Centre Master Plan. Domestically, Pat has established a strong civic, transit, and public works practice for the firm in the LA office. Notable award-winning projects include LA Metro Division 13 Bus Operations & Maintenance Facility, LAPD Valley Bureau Headquarters, Expo Rail Operations & Maintenance Facility and Orange County Water District Advanced Water Quality Laboratory.

Outside of RNL, Pat is all about family, and enjoys working in the yard and garden. He also has spent many years on the Montrose Church’s International Missions Committee and has traveled recently to Swaziland to help the community there build churches. A frequent traveler, Pat counts backpacking Europe, exploring Easter Island, climbing Machu Picchu, and driving the countryside of Ireland and Scotland as some of his favorite adventures.
