City of Fontana
Working closely with the City of Fontana staff, RNL identified goals and objectives for developing the Civic Center in the city of Fontana, California. The City’s primary goals for the Civic Center are to “change the perception of Fontana”, vitalize the downtown area, and encourage growth and redevelopment of the historic commercial area. An “urban context” study of the civic center and downtown area was developed to identify opportunities, constraints, and potential approaches for the conceptual master plan. The RNL team generated numerous initial planning studies which were informally presented to the City, narrowed to the two best alternative approaches for further development, and with staff review and input, developed into a final Master Plan scheme. Features of the Master Plan include: civic entry drive and new center park; new and remodeled city buildings; new municipal library facility; expanded public safety building; Landscape, walkways and streetscape; parking for city staff, visitors, and event participants; and private/commercial infill development.
This plan is the basis for design and development of a new and revitalized Civic Center and historic downtown commercial area. RNL was subsequently commissioned by the City to design the Civic Center Drive and Civic Center Park elements of the Master Plan.
