Barwa New Cairo City is a mixed-use retail, commercial and residential community development located roughly 30 km outside of Cairo. RNL’s scope of work began with an Open Space Masterplan concept, and was extended to include conceptual landscape design for a 40 hectare designer retail center. This retail zone was conceived as a mixed-use commercial, retail and residential destination for the Barwa community, but was also intended to be a regional draw from neighboring developments. RNL, in partnership with 5+ Design, Foster + Partners, and Arthouse Design, was asked to provide conceptual landscape architecture services for this mixed-use zone, including designs for the retail entries and a vibrant outdoor retail street, as well as design for the “Parade of Brands,” a linear pedestrian street with lush gardens, overhead canopy structures, and water features. As a major terminus to the Parade of Brands street, a large outdoor plaza space with a grand overhead canopy structure and interactive media and entertainment screens was designed to provide gathering and event space.
