The "Neighborhood Ecologies" concept generated RNL’s landscape design for the Colorado Springs Utilities East Service Center. The concept took the form of a series of themed demonstration gardens that can best be described as "eco-blocks". Eco-blocks are logical plant communities intended to enhance the "built" environment while sharing needed resources.

By combining suitable trees, shrubs, grasses and perennials into eco-blocks, not only are attractive landscapes created, but wind screens, increased shade, lower transpiration rates, and reduced overall water use is also achieved.
